Whistleblower protection for food workers is currently underway. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has teamed up with the Obama Administration to ensure that employees in the food industry are protected against retaliation. This means that if employees in the food industry choose to come forward about legal and safety issues, they are protected from termination and other forms of punishment within their workplace.
This new form of whistleblower protection for food workers will hopefully be accompanied with a rise in the quality and safety of food, as well as an increase in power and protection for food industry workers. The status of food workers as potential whistleblowers is a positive change for all Americans with regard to health and wellbeing.
David Michaels, Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, stated that “food industry workers must never be silenced by the threat of losing their jobs when their safety or the safety of the public is at stake.” His words echo a decades-long history of wealth in the food industry triumphing over the health and safety of those consuming food. Now that whistleblower protection for food workers is a concrete guarantee, rather than a gamble, we will hopefully see a rise in food quality, workers that are no longer afraid to come forward and report issues, and greater level of legality within the industry.
The new legal protection came into effect on April 18, 2016, and guarantees whistleblower protection for food workers who manufacture, process, pack, transport, distribute, receive, hold or import food.
